Senator Oberweis’ statement on education funding reform negotiations
Senator Jim Oberweis released the following statement after negotiations did not result in an agreement on education funding reform.
“Despite our repeated efforts to work with them on education funding reform, Democrat legislative leaders have chosen to continue their political theater. They have made it clear they aren’t interested in working in good faith on a bipartisan compromise that provides fair and equitable education funding for all our students and schools across the state,” Senator Oberweis said. “This is Madigan politics at its worst. Democrat leaders are using kids as pawns in a chess game designed to bail out a mismanaged Chicago Public Schools system.”
Senate Bill 1 has been sent to the Governor for action.
“We expect that Senate Bill 1 will be amendatorily vetoed by the Governor, and that Democrat leaders will try to override that amendatory veto. If their attempt to override does not succeed, we will be back at the negotiating table in earnest,” Senator Oberweis said.
